Weather Eye: Brace for more highs in the 90s

Didn’t Monday’s weather feel really great? Afternoon temperatures were only in the 70s after the record heat Thursday through Saturday. Morning clouds and slow afternoon clearing helped keep the afternoon temperatures at a tolerable level.

Let’s not forget the cool overnight temperatures as well. Early Monday morning, the low dipped into the 40s almost countywide. Ellen Smart near the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge reported a cool 45 degrees. Tyler Mode of Battle Ground had a record low of 43 degrees, and one report near Moulton Falls was 40 degrees. Can autumn be just around the corner?

Officially, Vancouver had a low of 49 degrees, which was 8 degrees below normal. Speaking of “normal,” here is a statistic for you: Sunday’s high in Vancouver was 80 degrees, and the low 57 degrees. The average high and low for that date were 81 and 57. How close to normal can it be? Also, last year on Aug. 21, we had a high of 78 degrees and another low of 57 degrees. Fun with statistics!

We’ll remain in a cool air mass today, and then higher pressure rebuilds and we begin to warm up quickly. The highs for Wednesday through Friday should be 90 to 95 degrees, plus or minus, as we experience another pattern with offshore flow and east-to-northeast winds. This means the coastal beaches will push into the 80s Thursday and maybe Friday, but nothing like last week.

Relief once again rushes in from the west with another marine surge and temperatures in the 75- to 80-degree range. At least that is the plan as I write this column late Monday. We’ll revisit this scenario in Thursday’s column.

Harvest time is in full swing in the gardens and orchards of the Pacific Northwest. Store displays of pumpkins and scary stuff are already up. Leaves are beginning to tell us autumn is coming. The average high temperatures are all downhill from here.

I have to add, did you see the gorgeous full sturgeon moon last week? The exceptional hot weather added the warm glowing color to it. Sept. 16 will give us the full harvest moon.
