A man wearing only his underwear fled into the Starbucks in Vancouver’s Uptown Village neighborhood to flee from an attacker who broke into his apartment Tuesday morning, according to the police.

Police were initially called to a report of a disturbance at a nearby apartment complex, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said.

Officers learned a man apparently broke into an apartment there and assaulted someone inside, she said. The man in the apartment, clad in just his underwear, ran away then attempted to hold off his assailant behind the entry door to the coffee shop.

Bystanders caught it on video as the attacker barged through the doors then struck the victim a few more times, before he was restrained by others then left the building.

Kapp said officers caught up with the alleged attacker and arrested him. James Alex Neal, 35, of Vancouver, was booked on suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree burglary.

Kapp said the victim was taken to a hospital for facial injuries. It wasn’t clear why Neal was at the apartments, she said.
