Weather Eye: Brace for hotter days, with a chance we’ll reach 100 degrees

Morning clouds offered a little reprieve from the heat, keeping afternoon temperatures in the low 80s as of 4 p.m. Monday. We will repeat this today and Wednesday with highs around 85 degrees. Then, heat wave No. 2.

Yep, it appears another heat wave will begin Thursday and last through Saturday, maybe Sunday. Predicted high temperatures vary greatly among weather sources. Local TV stations Monday afternoon had predictions ranging from 93 to 100 degrees for Thursday, from 97 to 104 degrees for Friday, and from 90 to 100 degrees for Saturday. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Portland had daily highs starting Thursday at 95, 99, 92 and 89 degrees.

Regardless of the details, it looks hot, hot, hot! Plan on highs of 95 to 100 degrees on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If we hit the 100-degree mark in Vancouver, it would be the first time this year. Many record highs may be vulnerable around the state.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting a bitter cold winter for many parts of the country, but its outlook for us calls for more rain than normal and maybe cooler than normal. For us in the lowlands, it stays wet and perhaps lots of snow in the mountains?

Maybe nature predicts better? Several readers have commented to me about the number of spider webs this month. Usually, they become abundant in September, so are the spiders stocking up for a cold winter? One reader’s spruce tree is loaded with more fir cones than normal.

For now, we bear the heat and think of things to come.
