Fire in crawl space damages Sifton home

A fire in the crawl space of a house in the Sifton neighborhood Sunday morning caused more than $150,000 in damage.

Firefighters responded to a fire reported at a two-story house at 7508 N.E. 123rd Court at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday and found light smoke coming from the crawl space vents, Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Joe Spatz said.

Crews stretched a hose line to the back and sprayed water into the vents, Spatz said. They went inside and cut part of the floor to better access the fire, knocking down the flames in about 10 minutes, he said.

Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Susan Anderson said that the owners of the house were out of town at the time. She estimated damage to the structure at about $39,000 and damage to the home’s contents at about $115,000.

Anderson said it likely will take an engineering analysis by the insurance companies to make a quality determination on what sparked the fire.

“It’s not suspicious at all,” she said. “We just need to test some things.”
