A motor home caught fire on Interstate 5 heading north near the Ridgefield exit Friday afternoon, leading to a grass fire along the roadway and blocked traffic.

A family of five from Beaverton, Ore., was inside the home, Washington State Patrol trooper Will Finn said, and all escaped safely.

The fire started around 4:20 p.m. and blocked one, then two lanes of the highway, and an exit ramp, as firefighters responded.

Black smoke was visible at a distance while the mobile home burned, and traffic was backed up well south, to 179th Street.

Clark County Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Tim Dawdy said traffic would likely remain backed up until 7 p.m. while state troopers investigated the fire and a the RV was towed.

The motor home stopped right at the edge of the road, near some dry grass, Dawdy said.

High winds in the area aggravated the fire, but firefighters from his district, Clark County Fire District 6, the Vancouver Fire Department and the state Department of Natural Resources were able to beat back the roughly quarter-acre fire in about a half-hour.

The fire destroyed the RV.
