Weather Eye: Above-average high temperatures today, then back into the 70s

We had another round of morning clouds Wednesday but wow, clear blue skies in the afternoon. Picture perfect! The weak weather system on Tuesday brought morning clouds also, but only spotty drizzle and sprinkles around Western Washington. Nothing here in the drought-stricken rain gauge in Vancouver.

Today pressure gradients relax and cut off any flow from the ocean, so we swell to above-average highs today in the mid- to upper 80s. This will be a one-day occurrence, as the flow switches back to onshore Friday.

That other weather system forecast to set up shop in Western Washington this weekend is still on track to do so. Whether we see any rainfall is literally up in the air. Some forecast models hint at measurable rainfall, but at this point I say it stays north of us. So varying degrees of morning clouds and highs in the mid- to upper 70s into early next week.

The forecast seems to flip-flop back and forth but this is the weather pattern we are graced with this summer.

I have rainfall reports coming in for July, which varied around the area but for the most part were on the light side and below normal for July. One comparison was between the two Vancouvers. Our Vancouver measured just .43 of an inch, .26 of an inch below average. Our friend Roland Derksen in Vancouver, B.C. recorded a whopping 1.83 inches for July.

The first cricket report comes from Larry Lebsack of northeast Hazel Dell, who heard one for only a half-hour over the weekend.
