PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD
Gordon Whisner of Vancouver, an assistant scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America, received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, presented by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Whisner logged over 100 hours of service in the past year with weekly scout meetings, monthly camping trips, an annual summer camp and biannual 200-mile bicycle trip. He is employed by AT&T.
NATIONAL ENGINEERING CONTEST WINNER
Carol Hsu, an instructor at Clark College, was one of two winners nationwide in Vernier Software & Technology’s 2016 Engineering Contest. The award recognizes educators’ innovative uses of Vernier sensors to teach students engineering concepts. As a winner, Hsu will receive $1000 in cash, $3,000 in Vernier technology, and $1,500 toward expenses to attend an engineering education conference.
THANK AMERICA’S TEACHERS GRANT WINNER
Patrick Mongrain, a teacher at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, was the national winner of the Farmers Insurance $2,500 Thank America’s Teachers grant. In his grant proposal, Mongrain highlighted the school’s behavior system — PBIS — positive behavior interventions and supports, which has helped to significantly decrease the rate of suspensions and expulsions, and the need for funds to implement other incentives for a positive learning environment.

These students from Vancouver were recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi: Christopher Dubbs, at Mississippi State University; and Carmella Rosu, at Andrews University in Michigan.
