Weather Eye: Thunder heralds change in weather as 80-degree days depart

As I write this column early Wednesday evening the weather action was just getting started. Increasing clouds from the south were developing as they moved north over our area. Thunderstorms were beginning to make their presence known with claps of thunder to our southeast.

This upper-level low with colder air aloft was overriding the warm air in the lower levels, which is a great recipe for thunderstorms. Looking out my window to the south, it was black as night. I won’t be able to tell you what happened next, due to my deadline. But it foretells our change in the weather well.

Today we see more rainfall later in the day and overnight. Temperatures will still be above normal, but no more 80-degree weather in the extended forecast. Friday through the middle part of next week looks more typical of April, and the well-known showers will be chasing us around. But that implies some clearing periods and sunshine, as well.

Freezing levels will lower over the weekend and some snow showers are likely down to pass levels. Nothing great but good sticking snow at Timberline.

We have enjoyed six days with highs in the 80s. April keeps surprising us. The average mean temperature is 57.1 degrees, 5.7 degrees above average. Rainfall as of 5 p.m. Wednesday was .78 of an inch, 1.25 inches below average.

There were only two or three days with highs below average so far this month. We will add to that count Sunday and Monday with highs only predicted in the 50s.
