A fire that destroyed a fifth wheel travel trailer at Lake Merwin Camper’s Hideaway was caused by a corroded power cord, fire officials said.

Crews with Clark County Fire District 10 were called to the private campground, north of Amboy at 24706 N.E. Columbia Tie Road, at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday for the reported fire.

The blaze was heavily involved by the time firefighters arrived and crews worked to keep the flames from spreading to the surrounding underbrush.

The 30-foot trailer was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and it was reported that it hadn’t been occupied for months, Clark County Deputy Assistant Marshal Richard Martin said.

The power cord supplying power to the trailer corroded and overheated, causing the blaze, he said.

The fire completely destroyed the vehicle, causing an estimated $30,000 in damage, Martin said.
