Another day in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League baseball season, another day that saw a first-place team stumble.

Daniel Copeland threw a complete game and Chris Huntsinger had three hits Wednesday, leading Skyview to a 3-1 home victory over Camas.

The Papermakers fell to 10-5 in the league standings, while Skyview improved to 8-5. No one knows who is going to win this league. But there are four teams within one game in the loss column.

That’s for you, the baseball fan, and members of the media to concern themselves with these days.

The Storm don’t want to take a look.

“Just play the game and keep up the tempo,” said Huntsinger, adding that he and his teammates are not scoreboard-watching; they are not preoccupied with the standings every day.

“If we play the game hard and compete, we’re going to put ourselves in good opportunities to win these games,” Skyview coach Seth Johnson said. “If you start thinking about the standings, that’s when you get snake-bit.”

Huntsinger doubled in the first inning and came home on Brody Barnum’s single. Skyview scored two more in the third inning. Huntsinger drove home Tanner Jacques with a single and was driven home on Carson Huseby’s single.

That was plenty for Copeland, who struck out six Papermakers.

Camas got a pinch-hit, run-scoring double from Tanner Howington in the seventh inning, but Copeland caught a pop-up for the second out of the inning and registered his final strikeout to end the game.

Another day, another team gets a little closer to the top.

“It feels great getting a chance at this, my senior year,” Huntsinger said.
