Two Vancouver tennis players finished their season strong for the University of Portland as senior Kent Andreasen, a Skyview High grad, and sophomore Alex Wallace, a Union High grad, helped the Pilots to a 10-0 home record.
They finished the West Coast Conference regular season with wins over Saint Mary’s and Pacific last weekend as the Pilots also clinched a berth to the WCC Championships.
As the No. 2 doubles team, Andreasen and Wallace won 7-6 (4) against Saint Mary’s. Then Wallace won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to help wrap up a 6-0 Pilots team victory.
“Alex Wallace was very impressive,” Portland coach Aaron Gross said in a press release on the UP website. “He and Kent came back from a break down in doubles to secure the clinching victory there and then he didn’t drop a game in his singles win.”
Against Pacific, Andreasen and Wallace got the Pilots rolling with a 6-3 doubles win, and then Wallace completed the 4-1 team victory by closing out his No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-0.
“Number two doubles really set the tone for the day,” Gross said. “Kent Andreasen, playing in his last match of his college career at home, and Alex Wallace played terrific.”
Gross said he has been impressed with Wallace, who took a year off from tennis to pursue baseball.
“Halfway through the fall season he decided tennis was what was in his heart. I don’t think anybody involved with our team can imagine him not being in the program. I am so thankful that he came back to tennis,” Gross said. “His attitude combined with some really impressive results this spring have made a huge difference in our program.”
Wallace finished this season 13-5 overall in singles, 6-2 in WCC duals.
Wallace and Andreasen were 6-3 as a doubles team, 3-3 in WCC play. Andreasen was 12-8 overall in doubles.
The WCC Championships are April 28-30 at Claremont, Calif.
