Battle Ground — Students at Battle Ground High School practiced an important life skill when they participated in mock job interviews with the help of Rotary Club members. To prepare for the interview, students read help wanted ads for one of several positions with a fictitious business, The Employment Company. There were 13 openings available, ranging from an apprentice plumber and a cashier, to a salesperson, a child development teacher and even a veterinary assistant. Students learned to tailor cover letters and résumés. The students also learned about interview etiquette and communication skills. “It’s a wonderful life skill,” said Nancy Heidrick, a member of the Lewis River Rotary who volunteers to interview students. “It’s important to know how to dress appropriately, speak appropriately — these are protocols that will never change, and these are skills that kids don’t learn at home.”
