Budget includes plan to hire extra deputies

The Clark County council on Tuesday approved a plan allowing the Clark County Sheriff’s Office to hire additional deputies above and beyond what the department’s budget allows.

The flexible hiring plan, part of the spring supplemental budget the council adopted this week, was introduced by Republican Councilor Julie Olson last month. It allows Sheriff Chuck Atkins to hire up to three additional deputies above what is currently budgeted. Once those positions are filled, they’ll become a permanent part of the sheriff’s office budget.

“This provides a long-term commitment to the public safety and removes hiring deputies from competition with other General Fund needs,” Olson said in a news release.
