Plankhouse schedules spring opening Sunday

RIDGEFIELD — Cathlapotle Plankhouse will mark its spring opening Sunday with family activities and a presentation by archaeologist Ken Ames.

The full-scale Chinookan plankhouse is on the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, 28908 N.W. Main Ave., Ridgefield.

The event is from noon to 4 p.m.

At 1 p.m., Ames will discuss: “What’s New at Cathlapotle? Lots!” Ames, professor emeritus at Portland State University, is one of the leading scholars in Lower Columbia River archaeology. Artifacts found during the Cathlapotle excavation will be on display.

There also will be naturalist-led hikes, starting in front of the plankhouse: noon, one-hour family nature hike; 2 p.m., spring ethnobotany hike (2 miles over uneven terrain).

There will be children’s activities from noon to 4 p.m.

The event is free with refuge admission.
