SHELTON — High school juniors and seniors have a chance to explore job opportunities in law enforcement this summer through the Washington State Kiwanis Youth Law Enforcement Camp.

The annual camp, led at the Washington State Patrol Academy in Shelton from July 10 to 16, gives teens interested in the career path an up-close look at the job.

Campers are given hands-on experience on the State Patrol’s driving course and tactical firing range, as well as the communications, forensics, SWAT and police dog functions of the agency. The camp also aims to expose students to problems and challenges faced by law enforcement officers on a daily basis.

Counselors and guest speakers come from various police departments around the state, so students are offered a variety of perspectives on careers in federal, state, county and local law enforcement.

Applications will be accepted until May 6 and can be downloaded at wsp.wa.gov, under “outreach.”

The camp is sponsored and paid for by Washington Kiwanis clubs statewide as well as corporate and private sponsors.
