Weather Eye: Cooler days, nights return after that record-setting 1-2 punch

We set two high-temperature records last week — 87 degrees on Thursday and 83 on Friday. I thought we might have a three-day sweep, but a cold air mass in the overnight and early-morning hours Wednesday held highs much cooler than forecast.

I thought it would be close to 80 degrees with east winds. The winds were late in arriving in the Vancouver area, and lows in the 20s and 30s in Clark County gave the rising sun some tough competition.

There was frost on rooftops and other surfaces in Salmon Creek early Wednesday with a low of 32. Lows in outlying areas were in the upper 20s, but most of Vancouver proper remained in the mid- to upper 30s. We don’t need that nipping chill for those tender plants.

Our normal high for April 10 is 62 degrees, the low 42, so we were really in record territory last week. The 87 degrees was the warmest for so early in the year. We probably won’t see that again for decades.

Rainfall has been sparse this month with only 0.05 inch in the bucket, 0.86 inch below average. The average mean temperature is 6.8 degrees above average at 57.4 degrees.

A change in the weather offering begins Monday with increasing clouds and some showers by darkness. A weak cold front will swing inland keeping us cooler (cold to some) for most of the week, with improving weather just in time for the weekend.

If the extended outlook through June is correct, we can expect warmer and drier weather to continue. I think we can handle that, but thinking back to last summer, that was maybe a little too much.

Take care and we’ll chat donned with our sweaters and sweatshirts on Tuesday.
