Weather Eye: Giddy with the sunshine? Spotty showers can’t keep it out of town

Remember those cloudy rainy days the past several months, with rivers of water running curb to curb down the streets? Record rainfall, record number of rainy days; it seemed at times that it would never end.

But as we know, the clouds always part and we enjoy the silver lining, as the old saying goes. Well, we have sure had a pot of silver with three days in the 70s and five dry days in a row. Like it?

A brief let down in the weather will usher those clouds and showers back to the local scene. Rain should reach the coast this afternoon and inland later tonight. Showers will abound Monday decreasing on Tuesday. Then we enjoy a repeat of last week. Strong high pressure with highs back in the 70s Wednesday through Friday. If things work out we could see a rare event — temperatures in the 80s!

A day in the 80s this early in April isn’t a sure bet but looks possible as I write this column Saturday evening. A marine push will come in at the end of the week, but it still should be dry through the weekend. Stay tuned and we will update the outlook on Tuesday.

March definitely went out like a lamb, with a March 31 high of 73 degrees after 74 the day before. Our last measurable rain was March 27. So March 2016 was a classic old folk tale month with a lion on March 1 and a lamb on March 31. It doesn’t always work out that way. Makes watching the weather fun, doesn’t it?

March ended with 5.19 inches of rain, 1.92 inches above average.

Let’s hope we are finished with heavy rain. It’s full speed ahead for gardening; just remember, the outlying areas are prone to frost into early May. City-dwellers are probably safe from a killing frost.
