Red-hot Spudders rout Washougal in baseball, 20-2

Three games into the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League schedule and the Ridgefield baseball teams remains undefeated.

If the Spudders’ record wasn’t impressive enough, their run total in Friday’s victory over Washougal will sure raise some eyebrows around the rest of the league.

The Spudders scored 13 runs in the fourth to break open a close game and beat the Panthers 20-2 to go into spring break on a heater.

“When you put up 10, 11 or whatever we put up that inning, it’s fun,” Michael Martin said. “You get the barrels flying and watch the baseballs go. It’s fun when you get up so big. You get to take some hacks up there.”

Eight Spudders, including Martin, had two hits. Spencer Anderson hit a three-run home run and finished with four runs batted in, Brian Gillenwater had a triple and a double, and Logan Black also drove in four runs.

“The goal is the league title,” Martin said. “We’ve got to keep playing hard. We haven’t had super good starts every game, but we never give up and we come back hard every time.”

In fact, Washougal took a 2-0 lead in this one before Ridgefield responded.

The good start is a bonus for the Spudders, but Ridgefield coach Nick Allen said there is a long way to go in a tough league. He considers R.A. Long and Hockinson to be the favorites.

“I feel good about our chances but our league is so deep,” Allen said.

He has an experienced squad that, he said, learns from its mistakes. The Spudders had a chance to beat 3A power Columbia River earlier this season but could not close out the Chieftains.

The Spudders, he said, understand the value of every out.

Of course, scoring runs in bunches is a big help, too.

“This isn’t a new thing today,” Allen said. “We’ve been barreling up a lot of baseballs this year.”
