One man is in jail and another in critical condition after a shooting in a Washougal intersection Thursday night.

Officers were called to the intersection of 27th and F streets at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday for a report of shots fired, Washougal police Sgt. Geoff Reijonen said.

When they arrived, they found both the victim and the suspect at the scene.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, was lying in the roadway suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest, Reijonen said.

Bystanders and officers administered first aid until fire personnel arrived and took him to an area hospital, Reijonen said, where he remained in critical condition Friday night after a couple of surgeries. Reijonen said the police were not yet releasing the victim’s name.

Investigators recovered a 9 mm pistol at the scene and officers identified a man there, Trevor D. Hauzenberger, 23, as the suspect, Reijonen said.

Hauzenberger was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault with a firearm and booked into the Clark County Jail, Reijonen said. Hauzenberger’s city of residence was not released, but voter registration records show he has lived in Washougal.

Investigators think the two knew each other but weren’t close, Reijonen said. “More or less acquaintances through a kind of friend-of-a-friend scenario.”

It appeared some kind of dispute broke out among several people that night, and it grew into something much more heated between two people involved. One went and got a gun, Reijonen said,

It was still unclear what led to the fight, he said, but it appeared to investigators to have been a fairly minor squabble that got out of hand.

The investigation is ongoing and police asked anyone with additional information to contact Detective Perry Houts at 360-835-8701.
