HURON, Ohio — Tom Baltes of Camas is riding along the shore of Lake Erie in Ohio and headed toward Lake Ontario as he progresses on his almost 4,000-mile cycling trip across America.

The trip is to raise awareness and money for the Arthritis Foundation and Volkssporting. Baltes has two siblings with rheumatoid arthritis.

He rode 91 miles on Tuesday, bringing his total to a bit more than 3,100.

His day included a rails-to-trails segment from Fremont to Clyde, Ohio, where he met a retired pathologist who had grown up in Battle Ground, then moved away after high school.

Baltes’ ride plan calls for him to arrive in South Portland, Maine, on Oct. 4, a journey of 3,890 miles. He has eight rest days scheduled.

His progress can be followed via his website at www.tomsbikeride.wordpress.com.
