Weather Eye: Forecast for rainfall off the mark as three fronts miss our area

Well, what can I say? We had a forecast bust Wednesday. Front No. 1 moved inland Tuesday evening — to our south. Front No. 2 went south as well for the most part, with just a glancing blow Wednesday night. Front No. 3 appeared it would take a more northern route and finally give us some rainfall today.

Not what we were anticipating, but hey, no complaints. If we forecasted sunny weather and it rained, well …

Some rainfall went into southern Oregon and northern California, which is sorely needed given the extensive wildfires down there. Further south, Los Angeles received heavy rain not from the northern weather systems but from the south. On Tuesday, 2.39 inches was recorded in downtown Los Angeles. That was enough to achieve the second rainiest September day on record. San Diego set a new record, too, with 1.15 inches.

I’m sure some of this rainfall poured into their reservoirs but there were also reports of flash floods. Too much rain in such a short time. Boy, what we would give for a couple inches of rain!

We had good potential for some substantial rain Wednesday but Mother Nature had other plans. High pressure is building for Friday and Saturday. We remain on the ragged edge of weather systems dropping down from the Gulf of Alaska on Sunday through much of next week.

There’s plenty of cold air gathering in Alaska, with first snows falling in many locations.

The outlook for the next two weeks calls for below normal temperatures and above average rain. This may be our first below average rainfall month since November. Ready for winter?

We should do better for mountain snowpack even with an El Ni?o present. Sure couldn’t do any worse than last year!

Take good care and we will chat on Sunday.
