Lake Shore — Crystal Steinmueller spent some of her summer hanging with new friends in the Amazon in Ecuador, mainly spider monkeys, parrots and tapirs.

Steinmueller traveled to Ecuador for five weeks to volunteer with AmaZOOnico, an animal rescue center. The center has more than 600 animals, and Steinmueller, along with 11 other volunteers from around the world, cleaned, fed and provided enrichments for the animals, and educated visiting tourists.

Steinmueller is the president and founder of Vancouver-based 2 Hands 7 Continents, a nonprofit which aims to promote a positive change for people, animals and the environment through volunteer service.
