Tom Baltes of Camas is working his way through Minnesota and nearing the mid-point of his ride across the United States.

On Tuesday, he did 101 miles, bringing his total to 1,983 miles since leaving the Oregon coast.

He’s gotten to see the northern lights and his day included “some serene rides through green tunnels of forest and marshland with sightings of bald eagles and a variety of wildlife.’’

The bicycle trip is to raise awareness and money for the Arthritis Foundation and Volkssporting. Baltes has two siblings with rheumatoid arthritis.

Bates’ schedule calls for him to reach the coast of Maine on Oct. 4, a journey of 3,890 miles.

His progress can be followed via his blog at https://tomsbikeride.wordpress.com.
