The Sacred Heart Conference of St. Vincent de Paul is holding a 4-mile walk/run to support the work the nonprofit does assisting those in need in north Clark County.

“This is the main fundraiser, really, that makes our work possible,” said Rex Holverson, president and treasurer of the conference.

The Friends of the Poor walk takes place 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Battle Ground, 1603 N. Parkway Ave.

Among the services the conference provides are emergency rent payments, along with help paying doctors bills, utility bills and auto repair costs. Last year, about $17,000 went toward utility assistance, Holverson said. Members also collect food donations and staff the Ozanam House food bank. The tri-church parish comprises St. Joseph the Worker in Yacolt, St. Mary of Guadalupe in Ridgefield and Sacred Heart.

The 4-mile walk goes through rural Battle Ground, Battle Ground Village and back to the church. Afterwards, lunch will be served.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. on the day of the walk. To get a T-shirt, register online by Sept. 6. For more information, visit www.svdpusa.net/walk/1180.

There are hundreds of similar Friends of the Poor walks being held around the nation on Sept. 26.
