Image — Local bee populations are in danger of collapsing due to habitat loss, pesticide use and other aspects of modern life, and students at the Clark County Skills Center are trying to help. According to a release from the Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center, researchers are looking for ways to help bee populations recover, and while doing so, they are encouraging people to build bee houses in their backyard.

“Pollinators are crucial to providing us with everything from food to shelter to recreational opportunities,” according to the same release, which goes to say that the bees that “nest in the cavities in these homes are not known to sting people, unless stepped on.”

Students at the Skills Center built the bee houses and are selling them for $50 apiece to benefit Columbia Springs.

Anyone interested in purchasing a bee house is asked to contact Kaley McLachlan at volunteer@columbiasprings.org or 360-882-0936 ext. 230.
