A year after a shooting that left her without use of her right eye, Abigail Mounce is planning to honor Halloween with a laugh.
When she and her husband Erich Mounce prepare to give out candy today, Abigail will be dressed as a pirate.
On the morning of Oct. 31, 2014, Abigail and Erich Mounce were sitting in their car at a red light at Northeast 63rd Street and Andresen Road, just a half-mile from their home, when gunshots erupted from the car next to them.
The man who shot at them was John Kendall, the Mounces’ next-door-neighbor with whom they had been in a yearslong legal feud. The primary source of tension was that Kendall had as many as five tenants and a home business in his home, which violated subdivision restrictions, the Mounces said.
After the horrific incident, Abigail spent about a week in the hospital and underwent facial reconstructive surgery. Doctors recreated her cheek with metal plates and skin grafts. Doctors reattached her ear, but the damage left her with only 40 percent of her hearing in her right ear.
Doctors eventually fitted her with a prosthetic right eye, leaving her with sight only from her left eye.
Erich and Abigail Mounce said they’re happy to be doing well and are excited that they both have Halloween off from work.
“I guess someone is looking out for us and giving us a second chance to enjoy each other’s company and have fun passing out candy,” Mounce said.
The costume shows that “she has such a great sense of humor,” Erich Mounce said. “Abigail is really dealing with life like a superstar.”
