Go, Ideas for your Weekend: Theater options abound, comedy competition

1. Journey to Green Gables

Journey Theater Arts Group inspires youth to perform on stage, opening its fall season with the production of “Anne of Green Gables: The Musical.” Based on the novel, orphan girl Anne travels to her new home on a farm, where, thanks to her pluck and personality, she discovers her own happiness. The play opens at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 6-7; 3 p.m. Oct. 31; and 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at Ridgefield High School, 2724 S.E. Hillhurst Road, Ridgefield. 2. Stories in the spotlight

The Edge is Magenta Theater’s new storytelling project, as performers tell stories from the heart, with tales suitable for youngsters and adults. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Magenta Theater, 606 Main St., Vancouver. This is a general admission performance, with no reserved seating. 3. Beads of past and present

The Clark County Historical Museum will open its latest exhibit, “Making Beauty: Native Beadwork of North America,” on Nov. 5. Connecting the past tradition with the work of today’s artisans, the exhibit will include beadwork from the Northwest Coast, Plateau and Plains regions, with pieces by award-winning artists and objects from the 19th century. To kick off the exhibition, guest curators Steve Grafe, of the Maryhill Museum of Art, and Angela Swedberg, a tribally certified Indian Artisan, will speak about creating “Making Beauty.” The opening reception begins at 5 p.m., with the lecture at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at Clark County Historical Museum, 1511 Main St., Vancouver. 4. Cuba in Portland

Artists Repertory Theatre has extended its world-premier musical “Cuba Libre,” which features Grammy-nominated band Tiempo Libre performing live at every show. Set in America and Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a Cuban musician follows his dreams, while haunted by memories of those he left behind in Cuba. Performances run through Nov. 15, starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday; and 2 p.m. Sundays and Oct. 31 at the Winningstad Theatre, 1111 S.W. Broadway, Portland. 5. Rising comics

The 36th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition whittles down 33 comedians to one champion through 22 shows at 18 venues across Washington. Kiggins Theatre will host the second night of the preliminary competition at 8 p.m. Nov. 5. Watch as 16 comedians perform five-minute routines in the hopes of impressing both the audience and judges.
