After Vancouver Public Schools’ time to appoint a board member had lapsed, Educational Service District 112 appointed Michelle Giovannozzi on Monday evening to the vacant seat.

The Vancouver district’s board in August did not fill a seat left vacant after the resignation of Nada Wheelock. State law requires the educational service district to fill school board vacancies if a local school board has failed to do so after 90 days.

“After considering different options, the ESD 112 board decided the best course of action in this situation was to appoint the only unopposed candidate running for the school board,” ESD 112 board Chairwoman Trish Kellogg said in a news release.

Wheelock, after getting a job with the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools, left the board in July to avoid a conflict of interest. She had been appointed to the school board in January.

Giovannozzi will fill Position 5 for the remainder of the term. She is running unopposed for Position 4. Board members serve four-year terms.

Although Wheelock has dropped her bid for re-election, she still is listed on the Nov. 3 ballot as running for Position 5 against longtime teacher Rosemary Fryer.
