Tom Baltes of Camas reached the Atlantic Ocean in Maine on Sunday, completing his 4,000-mile cycling adventure across the northern United States.

He finished at noon after a 29-mile ride. His trip was to raise awareness and money for the Arthritis Foundation and Volkssporting. Baltes has two siblings with rheumatoid arthritis.

He started at Seaside, Ore.

“So many great memories and such a rich collection of images of America to reflect on,’’ Baltes wrote on his blog. “Some areas were dull and monotonous while other areas brought breathtaking views, but each mile adds up to a country full of bounty, great people and plentiful wildlife.’’

Baltes and his wife began the long drive home heading north to Canada to drive along the St. Lawrence Seaway through Quebec and Montreal. They will return to the United States at Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan.
