Weather Eye: After a few more nice days, we’ll shift to cooler and a bit damp

Temperatures Saturday afternoon were around 70 degrees from ocean beaches through inland valleys. Today will be a repeat with clear skies but temperatures some 10 degrees warmer with easterly winds. The winds will reach coastal areas and bring highs there near 80 degrees.

After nice days, we’ll see clouds and moist air increase from off the ocean midweek. Cooler and a bit damp weather is on the horizon.

The coast was absolutely gorgeous Saturday, with temperatures near 70 degrees. Flocks of geese headed southward under blue skies.

A funny thing: I was working in the garage with the door open, enjoying the sunshine and hearing the ocean roar, when two woolly bear caterpillars marched in. They seem to be everywhere on the Long Beach Peninsula. I gently picked them up and placed them in a grassy area outside. About 10 minutes later they reappeared. I caught myself laughing up a storm.

Once again, I placed them outside, this time a bit farther away. I know they have many small feet, but can you imagine the energy expelled to travel a long distance? Yep, you guessed it. They came back inside the garage. Both had a narrow orange band in the middle. I placed them in my hand and watched as they moved around. I gave them a little pep talk and situated them down by the lakeside.

My conclusion is that since predictions are for a cold winter, they are seeking a warmer place to winter over.

Soon, we will have more hours of darkness, and Pacific storms will be at our door.
