Clark athletic report 11/23

A look back and ahead at what’s happening in Clark College athletics:

VOLLEYBALL

Notable: Clark finished second at the NWAC Championship to four-time champ Blue Mountain of Pendleton, Ore. The Penguins won six consecutive loser-out matches to reach the title match. Union High grad Meghan Turner was named Most Inspirational Player of the tournament. She was also named to the all-tournament team along with teammates Janessa Mast and Mountain View grad Melisa Lujca.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Notable: The Penguins opened their season with a 93-64 win at Tacoma last week. Five players scored in double figures led by Bryan Berg’s 21 and Dorrius Mathis’ 17.

Next games: Clark at Multnomah JV, 4 p.m. Tuesday; Clark at Pierce, 7 p.m. Dec. 2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Notable: Clark went 2-1 at the Yakima Valley Tip-Off Tournament, beating host Yakima Valley 65-56 in the consolation final. Clark also beat Whatcom 68-66, and lost its opener to Walla Walla 67-65Caylee Newsom and Kendyl Cone each scored 45 points total for the three games with Cone adding 21 rebounds and Newsom 13.

Next games: Clark at South Puget Sound, 6 p.m. Dec. 1; Clark at Pierce, 5 p.m. Dec. 2.
