Volunteer opportunities

Volunteer Connections provides opportunities through the Human Services Council. For information on the following and other opportunities, call 360-735-3683.

• The Clark County Food Bank is looking for volunteers to fold paper bags, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday for the Walk and Knock food drive on Dec 5. Volunteers also are needed for the 2015 Turkey Trot, which will be on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 26. Help is needed marking the course, stuffing race packets, brewing coffee, announcing races, handing out magnets, directing traffic and cheering on participants.

• Salvation Army seeks people to ring kettle bells and greet shoppers now through Dec. 24. Volunteers also are needed to staff The Giving Tree at Westfield Vancouver mall during two-hour shifts, handing out tags, collecting toys and answering questions, Dec. 4 through Dec. 24.

The Clark County councilors seek to fill a position on the Solid Waste Advisory Commission by a county resident at large. Members serve three-year terms. The volunteer group meets at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month, and makes recommendations to councilors on solid waste, landfills, transfer stations, recycling, waste reduction and related issues. The city of Ridgefield seeks to fill positions on the Ridgefield Parks Board, Salary Commission and Civil Service Commission. The terms begin Jan. 1. Parks Board members serve three-year terms and meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. The independent Salary Commission meets annually or as needed to review and establish the salaries of the mayor and the council members. The Civil Service Commission oversees the hiring and promotions of police officers. Members serve six-year terms and meet monthly as needed. The city of Vancouver seeks to fill a position on the Building-Fire Code Commission, a volunteer commission of at least five members that makes recommendations to the Vancouver City Council regarding building and fire codes. The commission meets as needed. City residency is not a requirement. Preference will be given to persons with a background in engineering and architectural fields. The Clark County Historical Society is looking for a volunteer with Adobe InDesign software and experience laying out publications, especially journals, to design the Clark County Historical Annual. The annual is approximately 100 pages long with 15 stories, some book reviews and advertisements, and six to eight photos. The cover will be designed with color.
