A 550-foot cargo ship lost steering in the Columbia River and went aground for several hours Saturday before being refloated, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Viking Emerald was carrying a load of vehicles bound for the Port of Portland at 4:16 p.m. when it notified the Coast Guard that it had lost its steering and gone aground on the Washington side of the river, between Goat Island and Martin Island north of Woodland.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Norcross said tugboats dispatched to the scene were able to refloat the vessel and assist it the rest of the way to Portland.

Norcross said no injuries, pollution or damage to the vessel were reported.
