Most people have had something framed: a personal memento, a family photo, a special award. Some items that end up in frames are mundane, but it would be a mistake to think that the job of framing is without creative challenges. Teri Black-Carroll, a design consultant at Beard’s Framing in Vancouver, has framed a piece of the moon and Wilt Chamberlain’s American Express card. Such unusual projects are infrequent, and are no more important than the meaningful, personal, bread-and-butter-type jobs that Black-Carroll takes on every day. That’s why a job she thought would be temporary has become a lifelong passion that has provided Black-Carroll with a long career. “At first I thought it would be a few years getting away from the design table,” says the Washougal resident. “Now it IS my design table.”

Name: Teri Black-Carroll.

Residence city: Washougal.

Employer name: Beard’s Framing, 11325 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver.

Educational/professional background: I have a Bachelor of Arts from Western Washington University and have worked for Beard’s Framing for 20-plus years. With a major in design and minor in art history, it just fit.

How you got started in your business: I started in 1986 after graduating from WWU and I’ve loved it ever since. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’ve been all over in our company, from spending time working in our warehouse, to managing multiple store locations, to working at our corporate office on special projects. It’s new and exciting every day.

Personal/business philosophy: Do what you love, and love what you do. I love putting smiles on the faces of the people who come in each day.

Most rewarding part of job: I love my job because of all my truly amazing customers. I’ve made some very wonderful connections. I create smiles and laughter and sometimes — rare times — tears. And I get to say “TAH-DAH” every single day.

Most challenging part of job: All jobs have challenges, mine just has fewer than most, I believe, because I work with a very special set of unique and talented people who always have each other’s back and the answer is always, “Yes, I can.”

One thing readers might find surprising about your work: I really CAN frame anything. I mean, if I can frame Madonna’s underwear (that really happened), bring on the rest of the challenge, I’m up for it.

Your favorite travel destination and type: I love to hike the (Columbia River) Gorge with my hair in a ponytail, and jump in headfirst and swim Oneonta Gorge at the spur of the moment just as much as I like to travel to Italy first-class and stay at exclusive resorts. I even love our train trips to Seattle. Every experience is uniquely different and I love them all.

Best feature of your Clark County community: I’ve lived in Vancouver most of my life. I love our community because it feels like home, like a small town with the benefits of a big city. I go places here and I see people I know. Also, I love that I can drive to the beach or to the mountain and decide it that morning.

What would make your community a better place? Oh I don’t know, maybe we need a few more trees.

Favorite restaurant/pub/coffee shop/store: Our Beard’s stores, of course. Crazy but it really is true, because like I said, I work with some amazing talent, some people with very unique skill sets, and we learn so much from each other’s ideas and creativity and sometimes each other’s craziness.

Hobbies: Photography is my main passion. I love to hike and bike, kayak, and go to the beach. Photography is a mix of science and art and it is very specific, as is framing. It feeds my soul and gives me a creative outlet. I also love to cook and bake; again, that science combined with art thing.

Most enjoyable book/play/movie/arts event in past 12 months: Cirque du Soleil performance of “O.” This was simply beyond words, utterly divine!

Something you’d like to do this year/within five years: I would like to go on a photo excursion in a remote location and document things most people never get to see, then bring those images to life where they can be seen by all. It might just change one person’s perspective. I would also love to help our autistic community through education. I would love to see people on the (autism) spectrum be better prepared for their adult lives. It would be so rewarding to just make a difference to one person.

One word to describe yourself: Industrious.

Person you’d most like to meet: God.
