Boys State XC: Ridgefield’s Griffith places fifth

PASCO – On one hand, Silas Griffith could have been overjoyed with being the fifth best 2A cross country runner in the state.

Despite a summer injury, the Ridgefield runner ended his junior season with a personal-best 5,000 meter time of 15 minutes, 44 seconds at the WIAA state cross country championships Saturday.

Among local runners, Griffith was the top finisher and had the fastest time in any boys race at Sun Willows Golf Course.

But the same competitive fire that makes Griffith great meant he wasn’t too pleased with fifth place. He was in second for much of the race before being passed by three runners, including two in the final stretch.

“I went too hard on the hills,” Griffith said. “That kind of ate me up, so I didn’t have much left to kick. That’s when people passed me.”

An overuse injury meant Griffith couldn’t log as many miles as he hoped over the summer. Yet he ran virtually uncontested in every race until Saturday.

“Coming in fifth isn’t bad, but it’s a little bit frustrating,” said Griffith, who placed 16th as a sophomore. “I’ll just train harder and come back next year.”

Along with Griffith, Kyle Radosevich placed 22nd as Ridgefield finished eighth in the 2A team competition.

Camas, which won the District 4 title two weeks ago, placed sixth in the 4A team competition. Senior captain Adam Ryan was the fastest local in that race, finishing 21st in 15:53. Teammate and district champion Yacine Guermali placed 37th in 16:02.

“Our team definitely has a brotherhood that goes beyond this race here,” Ryan said. “That definitely translated to our race. We fought for each other.”

Skyview had two runners finish in the top 35. Mason Scheidel placed 31st in 15:59, three places ahead of teammate and bi-district champion Chanse Gilbert.
