Drew Preuninger says he is ready for this opportunity, even if this opportunity came up a little earlier than expected.

Preuninger has been named the head coach of the Heritage boys basketball team.

The name should be familiar.

Drew Preuninger played basketball at Camas, playing for then head coach Scott Preuninger, Drew’s father.

Now Drew Preuninger, 25, is taking over for his dad, who was the Heritage boys coach last season. Drew was an assistant with the Timberwolves.

The position came open when Scott Preuninger accepted the head coaching position for the Camas girls basketball program.

“This is a little sooner than the plan,” Drew Preuninger said, noting that his father’s departure from Heritage after one season was unexpected.

“I think I’m ready because, just being there for a year, I’ve built good relationships with the kids. I feel I’ve got their trust,” he said. “We can change the culture and make things happen in the next couple of years.”

Preuninger said his culture is all about positivity.

“Not going out there expecting to lose,” he said. “Go out there and expect to win.”

The first day of practice is Nov. 16.
