Bike lanes at a busy intersection in west Vancouver will be painted green this week as part of a pilot project by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Crews plan to add green to the existing bike lanes at the intersection of state Highway 501 and West Fourth Plain Boulevard in Vancouver’s Fruit Valley neighborhood. The change aims to improve safety by adding a visual cue for drivers to watch out for bicycles, according to WSDOT.

Officials will evaluate the project to determine whether to use it more broadly. It will also test a durable green paint that’s designed to withstand heavy traffic and rainy conditions.

Work will continue from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, according to WSDOT, weather permitting.
