4A-3A-2A boys track: Washougal’s Bischoff places 2nd in discus

TACOMA — Standing 6-foot-5, Joshua Bischoff has a large presence.

But Saturday, his smile was bigger than his stature.

The Washougal junior placed second in the Class 2A discus at the state track and field championships. He arrived at Mount Tahoma High School just hoping to grab one of eight spots on the awards podium.

“I expected to get seventh at best,” Bischoff said. “When I got second, it was the most shocking thing to me.”

Adding to the shock, five of Bischoff’s six throws didn’t go well. He scratched twice and had three tosses that were less than the 151 feet, 9 inches he threw at the district meet last weekend.

But on his third throw, everything clicked.

“I had my mind clear,” Bischoff said. “It was pretty much blank. Just the habit of throwing so much came through.”

The disc sailed 158 feet, 2 inches, a personal best by more than six feet.

“When I saw it flying through the air, I knew it was going to be a good one,” he said.

While Bischoff finished higher than he expected, Mountain View senior Lexington Reese hoped for higher than his third-place finish in the 4A javelin.

“I was looking for more, but I’ll take it,” Reese said. “I just had fun. I didn’t know if I was going to even throw this year.”

In October, Reese suffered a broken wrist that required surgery. Yet his marks were among the state’s best throughout the season, twice surpassing 190 feet.

Saturday, Reese stumbled as his feet crossed over during his second throw, his first of three consecutive fouls.

“If you don’t have your steps down, you’re done,” he said.

Yet Reese rebounded on his final throw with his longest of 184 feet, 11 inches. South Kitsap’s Cole Sunkel won the event in 193-1.

• Skyview senior Kaden Harbertson placed fourth in the 3,200 in Class 4A. The senior’s time of 9 minutes, 12 seconds was a personal best by 17 seconds.

• Woodland’s Eli Whitmire earned a top-eight medal for the third consecutive day. Saturday, he finished seventh in the 100 meters adding to his third-place finish in the long jump and eighth place in the triple jump.

• Ridgefield sophomore Silas Griffith placed fifth in the 3,200 in Class 2A. He ran a personal-best for the fourth consecutive race, finishing in 9 minutes, 28 seconds.
