Weather Eye: We’re covered with clouds, but the month is still unusually dry

Clouds, clouds and more clouds. We will remember this Memorial Day weekend as the cloudy one. Better than rain, rain and more rain, right?

We do have a promise of sunshine and warm temperatures once again … after the holiday! I would say Wednesday through Saturday looks like a pleasant array of weather everyone will be happy with. Marine clouds may linger here and there, but not solid overcast. Tuesday could present some drizzle from those clouds.

You may have heard that this year was the earliest snow melt on record (back to 1981) on Mount Hood. The official measurement is taken at 5,400 feet elevation. It was just a few years back that snow lingered in the mid-elevations into July.

Despite the endless cloudiness this month, we are about one degree above normal on the average mean temperature. The clouds at night keep lows much warmer, somewhat offsetting the cooler cloudy days.

Rainfall for May is still at 0.68 of an inch, 1.25 inches below normal. With only seven days left, it’s be a safe bet we’ll end up much drier than average. The summer outlook, too, is warm and dry, probably with the usual ups and downs.

The traditional Rose Festival Low may hover overhead next week as festivities get underway in the Rose City — more clouds and drizzle.

And then we have the Fourth of July, sometimes nice and sometimes, well, not. After that, the old saying goes summer begins in the great Northwest.

As I sign off, remembering those who served in our military and made our continued freedom possible, I hope we all take time today from the barbecue and relaxing to solemnly think about the holiday.
