Girls tennis: Hampton into 4A district semifinals

Three-time defending state champion Skyview senior Sammi Hampton remains on track for a fourth 4A district title after two 6-0, 6-0 wins on Friday at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

Hampton, undefeated in her high school career, will take on Camas’ Sam Merrill in Saturday’s semifinal round beginning at 8 a.m. at VTC.

The other semifinal will have Mountain View’s Amila Gogalija against Camas’ Esther Kwon. Gogalija also had two 6-0, 6-0 wins, and Kwon dropped just one game in her two matches.

Defending 4A state doubles champs Jenn Lewis and Hannah Gianan of Camas moved into the district semifinals, dropping just one game in two matches.

The singles and doubles championship matches are also Saturday following the semifinals and a suitable player rest period.

The top two placers in singles and doubles advance to the 4A state tournament next weekend in Richland.

3A bi-district — Prairie’s Akari Baba is returning to the state tournament, having reached the semifinals of the bi-district tournament at Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma.

Baba, who won the bi-district tournament and placed third at state last year, dropped two games in two bi-district matches Friday.

The semifinals and finals are Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. in Tacoma. The top five singles and doubles placers advance to state next weekend at Kennewick.
