The Port of Vancouver and Seattle consultant NBBJ will gather Tuesday for a public meeting to discuss components of the port’s effort to craft a master plan for revitalizing its Terminal 1 waterfront property. The port’s board of commissioners and NBBJ will discuss the planning process and initial concepts for the waterfront project during the workshop, to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the port’s office, 3103 N.W. Lower River Road, Vancouver.

Commissioners will take public testimony during the waterfront workshop, which will follow the board’s regular morning public meeting. The workshop comes more than a month after commissioners voted unanimously to pay NBBJ, a global urban planning firm, no more than $300,000 to write a master plan outlining potential commercial, retail and public uses at the 13-acre site between Esther Street to the west and Columbia Street on the east in Vancouver’s downtown.

The hiring of NBBJ came after a related move in December, when commissioners unanimously approved hiring Leland Consulting Group of Portland to help the port develop a mixed-use building at Terminal 1.

The new structure would include space for Red Lion Hotels Corp., which now operates the Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay at the port-owned site. The board’s action handed Leland a contract for up to $250,000 to provide several services, including financial and market analyses. The port has said the goal would be to keep the existing Red Lion hotel operating while the new mixed-use structure is being built. It’s not clear what will happen to the existing hotel site, but the port is interested in preserving at least some of its historic elements.

In a news release, the port said NBBJ will use current city plans, market data, and discussions with key stakeholders and citizens to create an overarching master plan for the port’s property. Initial plans for redevelopment could include a mixed-use building, new hotel and public attractions, the port said.

Tuesday’s waterfront workshop will be broadcast live on www.cvtv.org.
