A new list by MileCards.com of the 10 best and worst U.S. airports for summer delays ranks Portland International Airport as the sixth-best in the nation for on-time arrivals during the summer travel season.
Airplanes arrived on time in Portland 79.9 percent of the time, according to the study, which was based on an aggregation of Department of Transportation data for the past 10 summers. Honolulu had the highest ranking, with 87.7 percent on-time arrivals, followed in the top five by Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Orange County, Calif., and San Jose, Calif.
Newark had the worst on-time arrivals, with just 64.5 percent of flights arriving on time. Both New York City airports rounded out the bottom three on the list. Others included San Francisco, Boston, San Juan, Philadelphia, Chicago O’Hare and Miami.
June is the worst month for summer delays, with two-thirds of the nation’s busiest airports reporting more frequent delays in June than July or August.
