Weather Eye: This week will look much like last week, but not as warm

Plenty of gray skies Saturday, but that did nothing to stop the annual Parade of Bands in Hazel Dell. In fact, for those marching, I would say it was “perfect” parade weather. Spectators can always bundle up. So, chalk up another year in the record books without measurable rainfall for the parade.

Those gray clouds will clear some today, making for a sunny afternoon, great for those of you celebrating birthdays or other pleasant occasions. Do I smell the barbecue?

We are more than halfway through May already; boy, time flies. We are running behind in the rainfall department once again with just 0.68 inch recorded in Vancouver so far this month. That is three-quarters of an inch below average. The average mean temperature is running 57.2 degrees, about seven-tenths of a degree above average. Good thing we had a couple of 80-degree days to keep that statistic in the positive category.

So what is on the horizon? We see an increased chance of showers or even a thundershower Monday as moisture and instability increase. This will linger most of the work week with lots of gray clouds, and a few sun breaks especially later in the week. Kind of a repeat of last week, except no 80-degree days.

Memorial Day weekend may turn out sunny and pleasant, but that is still a ways off, so we’ll focus more clearly on that later this week. Odds are that May will end up drier than normal, just like last month. The governor has declared a drought emergency for Washington. Water flows this summer will be low, maybe at record levels.

You have seen this on the TV news channels in Portland of Oregon rivers and reservoirs. We go into our driest months beginning in June, and October is a long ways off before autumn rains can bring some relief.

Enjoy a partly sunny Sunday before a few showers jump around the region and maybe a few claps of thunder on Monday.
