Prep roundup: Trio of River girls win district titles at 3A track and field meet

Taylor Hallquist, Evi Wilson and Brooke Williams won district titles as the Columbia River girls track and field team tried to keep pace with Kelso on the first day of the Class 3A district meet in Kelso.

Columbia River finished the day with 108 points, 11 behind Kelso’s leading 119.

Hallquist won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 28.58 seconds; Wilson won the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches; and Williams won the triple jump at 35-10. River also won the 400 relay in 50.93.

Prairie’s Michaela Bruns won the 3,200 in 11:58.48.

In the boys meet, Kelso also leads over Columbia River 93-80. Austin Blankenship and Jacob Ringold paced the Chieftains. Blankenship won the 3,200 in 9:49.84, while Ringold won the triple jump in 42-51/2. River also won the 400 relay in 43.94.

Prairie’s Michael Schmidt won the 300 hurdles in 41.83. The meet concludes Thursday in Kelso.

Baseball

Hockinson 3, W.F. West 2 — Jared Oja squeezed home Brandon Anderson from third with no outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Hawks a win in the first round of the 2A district tournament.

Hockinson will play Centralia at 4 p.m. Thursday in Centralia for a berth to state.

In game that started Tuesday in Hockinson before being suspended by rain after seven innings, play lasted less than an inning when it was relocated to Centralia on Wednesday.

After holding the Bearcats scoreless in the top of the eighth, Hockinson loaded the bases on a single, error and intentional walk.

Aaron Willman’s run-scoring groundout in the bottom of the seventh tied the game 2-2 for the Hawks and sent the game into extra innings.

Oja also pitched 22/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Centralia 11, Ridgefield 8 — The Spudders scored six runs in the top of the first, but couldn’t make it stand in a first-round game in the 2A district tournament.

The Spudders will play W.F. West at 6 p.m. Thursday in Chehalis in a loser-out game.

Centralia scored six in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. But Ridgefield rallied for two in the fifth to reclaim the lead. The Tigers scored three in the bottom of the fifth to go up 10-8.

Jeremy Martin was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI to pace the Spudders.

Skyview 3, Camas 1 — Mitchell Smith pitched a complete game and Kordell Vasbinder singled home Bryson Enge with the go-ahead run in the fifth as Skyview eliminated Camas from the 4A district tournament. Skyview will play Battle Ground at 5 p.m. Thursday at Propstra Stadium for a berth to state.

Smith gave up one run on six hits while striking out three. Enge went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

Elma 4, La Center 3 — Jack Ossenkop had a two-run single in a three-run second inning for the Wildcats, but it wasn’t enough as La Center was eliminated from the 1A district tournament.

Stars of the day

• Colleen Driscoll, Mountain View softball, pitched a complete game and went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI in a 6-5 win over Skyview.

• Sam Rice, Ridgefield softball, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Spudders to a 5-3 win over Woodland. The win secures a district playoff spot for the Spudders.

• Faith Udy, Woodland golf, shot a 1-under-par 36 at Tri-Mountain as the Beavers fell to Ridgefield in a close match.
