Ridgefield — “Phenomenal” is the word doctors at Oregon Health and Science University have used to describe the heart transplant surgery and post-operative recovery of Bob Meek.

Meek is the theater and choir director at Ridgefield High School — but he’s been off the job and a patient at OHSU since January while waiting for a transplant after a virus damaged his heart.

In February, more than 100 of Meek’s friends and students pulled together a fundraising variety show, “The Heart Beats,” to help with the medical bills. Meek, who has a wife and three children, celebrated his 40th birthday at OHSU in March. Finally, at the beginning of May, a heart became available and Meek’s surgery went swimmingly.

He may be home by the time you read this. Read more about Meek on the Facebook page “Bob’s Heart Beats,” where his wife, Liza, wrote: “I hope one day I get to thank the people who saved his life.”
