Weather Eye: Weather this week should quench our county’s thirst

The cold front that moved through Sunday did little to make a dent in our rain totals for the year, only a few hundredths of an inch. However, I mentioned the possibility of wrap-around moisture moving in from the east as the low spins and heads that way.

At 5 p.m. Monday, clouds were indeed thickening, radar was showing a blob of moisture heading toward Clark County, and light rain had begun. This was expected to dump an inch of rain overnight into early this morning. Not all areas will get that much, and some may see more.

We certainly need a good soaking and this will be the best chance this week. Two more cold low-pressure systems will drop down from the Gulf of Alaska on Thursday and Sunday but their main moisture will remain off the coast as it slides south into California. Still, we keep a chance of showers almost any day this week and through the weekend.

It won’t be a washout by any means later in the week, as sunshine will makes its appearance. High temperatures that struggled to top 60 degrees Monday — and will again today — should inch upward to seasonal normals.

Don’t rain on my parade

The big question this week: will it rain on the parade in Hazel Dell on Saturday? We talk about this each year about this time, because they seem to have the luck of the Irish when it comes to the weather. Most years over the past three decades, it has been dry. On only a small handful of days was there measurable precipitation for parade day — and most of that fell after the parade. I’ll update you on Thursday, but right now I would say we will be in between weather systems and it should be partly cloudy to partly sunny.

Enjoy the rain, as I’m sure the lawn and gardens will. See you on Thursday.
