The season ended on Saturday for the Evergreen Lacrosse Club with a 17-7 loss to Lake Sammamish in a Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association playoff match at McKenzie Stadium.
Lake Sammamish led 7-6 at halftime, then pulled away in the second half after a pair of injuries depleted the Evergreen lineup.
“Our defense really did well, especially in the first half,” Evergreen coach Shawn Perez said.
Perez said her Evergreen team continued to compete to the finish against a Lake Sammamish team that is among the more established girls lacrosse programs in the state. Lake Sammamish advanced to face top seeded Issaquah in the state quarterfinals — a rematch of the 2014 state championship game.
Madeline McKinnon scored five goals to pace the Evergreen offense. A Union High School senior, McKinnon finished with 43 goals on the season. On Saturday, she also had four draw controls and collected three ground balls.
Olivia Hood and Maecy Arthur also scored goals for Evergreen. Hood had three ground balls and five draw controls. Evergreen goalkeeper Molly Johnson made 10 saves.
This was the ninth season that Evergreen Public Schools has had a girls lacrosse team, and the fourth year in a row that the team has qualified for the state playoffs.
“This team was a real strong unit,” Perez said. “Everyone helped each other improve their game, regardless of how much experience they had.”
Including the playoff loss, Evergreen finished 9-4 overall. It was 6-1 in the Nisqually Conference, one game behind Puyallup.
