The Port of Vancouver says it posted a record $37.5 million in operating revenue in 2014, up 25 percent from 2013. Total cargo tonnage, both imports and exports, came in at 6.6 million metric tons, up 47 percent from 2013. Last year was the 103-year-old port’s best revenue and tonnage year, according to the port.
That growth meant plenty of work for Slingmen Minh Vo, seen at right, and other port workers who on a recent day were taking in a shipment of steel from the “Saga Explorer,” a Hong Kong-flagged container vessel, at the Port of Vancouver.
Imports, including steel, wind energy components and Subaru vehicles, were up 118 percent in 2014. Steel slabs, a new commodity for the port last year, were part of the port’s total steel import tonnage.
The port’s largest export by volume is grain, including corn, soybeans and wheat. Altogether, those commodities increased by 53 percent to 2.59 million metric tons.
