College notebook: UW’s Gilbert sets Husky Track record

Skyview graduate wins 3,000 in dual against Cougars

University of Washington redshirt freshman distance runner Colby Gilbert set a UW outdoor track facility record in cruising to victory in the 3,000-meter run in a dual meet victory Saturday over rival Washington State.

The Skyview High School graduate’s winning time of 8 minutes, 11.73 seconds broke the former Husky Track record of 8:14.79 set by Todd Wakefield of Washington State.

Gilbert “looked fit and confident as he worked his way to a big win,” according to the school website gohuskies.com. Gilbert, who holds the UW indoor school record in the 3,000, finished more than eight seconds ahead of teammate Tyler King, a cross country All-American who finished in 8:20.09.

• Washington’s Kristina Owsinski, a Prairie High School graduate, set a UW-WSU dual record with a winning pole vault clearance of 13 feet, 9¾ inches. The previous record of 13-7¼ was set by WSU’s Tamara Diles in 2005.

Baseball: CCC honors Hadley

Concordia University junior Austin Hadley was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

The Evergreen High School graduate struck out 10 and allowed just two hits against British Columbia on Saturday to help CU advance to the championship game of the NAIA West Grouping Tournament in Portland.

Hadley threw 85 of his 130 pitches for strikes, finishing one out shy of a complete game shutout.

The junior right-hander lowered his season ERA to 2.12 and has held his opponents to a .192 average over 19 appearances.

UBC beat Concordia on Monday to claim the title and an automatic bid to the NAIA national playoffs.

Softball: NCU’s Bonife, OIT’s Duncan named All-CCC

Northwest Christian University junior Parker Bonife was named First Team All-Cascade Collegiate Conference at third base, and Oregon Tech senior pitcher Jessi Duncan garnered Honorable Mention in honors announced by the conference.

Bonife, a Union High School graduate, led NCU in multiple categories including batting average (.327), home runs (7), RBI (33), walks (23), slugging percentage (.589) and on-base percentage (.460).

Bonife broke her own single-season RBI record and became the Beacons’ all-time leader in the category with 86.

Duncan, a Prairie High School graduate, is 15-7 with a 2.30 earned run average, also recording two saves.

Track and field: Records fall again

• Saint Martin’s University junior Shannon Porter broke her own school record in the 1,500 meters Saturday at the SMU Last Chance Qualifier meet in Lacey, winning with a time of 4 minutes, 35.32 seconds. Porter, a Hockinson High School graduate who has SMU records at 1,500; 3,000; 5,000 and 10,000 meters in her first season in the program, broke her own record of 4:35.56.

• Northwest Nazarene University sophomore Kelly Nigro teamed with Chelsey Knott, Taylor Deskins and Lexi Tubbs to break their own school record in the 400-meter relay Saturday at the Idaho/Utah Border Clash meet hosted by Boise State. Woodland High School graduate Nigro and her teammates placed third in 47.55 seconds.

Softball: Linfield at regional

The Linfield College softball team begins play Friday in an NCAA Division III Regional tournament in Decorah, Iowa.

The Wildcats open against St. Thomas of Minnesota, with St. Scholastica of Minnesota facing host Luther College in the second game of the double-elimination tournament. The regional winner advances to a super regional.

Linfield’s lineup includes senior outfielders Erin Carson (Camas High School) and Grace Middelstadt (Prairie High School), senior catcher McKenna Spieth (Union High School) and sophomore designated hitter Erin Tauscher (Camas).

Spieth was named First Team All-Northwest Conference, while Carson and Tauscher were named to the Second Team.

• Whitworth University sophomore pitcher Makayla Lefever was named All-NWC First Team. The Woodland High School graduate was 17-5 with a 1.49 earned run average.

Track and field: Clark’s Normandeau named athlete of week

Clark College freshman Thomas Normandeau, a Washougal High grad, was named NWAC track and field athlete of the week.

He ran a personal best 1:53.8 in the 800 at the Titan Twilight meet in Eugene.
