Weather Eye: Thanks to brisk northwest wind, weather felt like winter revival

How did you enjoy that little bit of late winter/early spring weather Tuesday and Wednesday? That northwest wind was quite brisk Wednesday afternoon, adding to the chill in the air. Rainfall amounts were rather light, generally under a tenth of inch here in the lowlands but a third to one-half inch in the foothills.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday I only recorded a tenth of an inch of rain for both days. I know some areas probably had much more. That rain was the first for the month but not the last. Forecast charts indicate another trough of low pressure moving in by Monday. So next week could see a repeat of this week, rain-wise.

I had an email Tuesday from our weather buddy Roland Dersken in Vancouver, B.C. He wrote, “On this date 13 years ago, we had snow here in the city! My latest ever recording of snow. Yesterday there was no snow, but some observers in the city reported enough hail to whiten the ground. Very unstable conditions. Anyway, it looks like we’re on the upward trend with temperatures now. Could we see our first 80-plus soon? Stay tuned.”

We already have beaten out the other Vancouver on the 80-degree highs this year. Last month we had a couple of days at 80 degrees or better.

The National Weather Service is sharing important information about severe weather in the Pacific Northwest. Rather than including it all in one week, they have divided it up over several weeks. May 3 and 4 focused on thunderstorms. The next coming up is on wildfires. Go to: www.wrh.noaa.gov/wrh/seasonal/severeAwareness/2015/.
